The station is controlled by an artificial intelligence known as SHODAN (Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network), which has become corrupted and seeks to annihilate humanity. System Shock takes place in a futuristic cyberpunk setting where players assume the role of a hacker who awakens aboard a space station called Citadel Station.
